Born in Bolton, England, he studied mathematics at Cambridge University before turning to music. He trained at the St. Petersburg Conservatory of Music and the Royal Academy of Music in London. He was the principal director of the English National Ballet and worked with prominent companies such as New York City Ballet, Houston Ballet, National Ballet of Canada and the Royal Ballet of England. In 2005 he joined the San Francisco Ballet as musical director. He also conducted ensembles such as Hallé Orchestra, Holland Symfonia, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, Odense Symphony Orchestra in Denmark. He made his debut in the United States as a symphony conductor with the Silicon Valley Symphony, and was immediately invited to perform again. With the Orchestra of the San Francisco Ballet he worked intensely to perfect the artistic quality of the group. With this orchestra he recorded several albums with works by composers such as Tchaikovsky, Délibes and Shostakovich, as well as unpublished recordings of pieces by Bizet, Moszkowski, Shinji Eshima and Maury Yeston. The recording of Conversations With Nijinksy by composer C.F. Kip Winger was recently nominated for a Grammy award.
