Born in London, he trained with Marie Rambert and later made his performing debut with the legendary Ballet Rambert. In 1951 he joined the Sadler’s Wells Ballet (now Royal Ballet), where he rose to the rank of principal dancer (1959-1970) performing an extensive range of classical and dramatic roles, most of them with his wife Annette Page. His first ballet, The Fairy's Kiss, was choreographed in 1967 for the Dutch National Ballet and was later taken into the repertoire of London Festival Ballet (now English National Ballet). Director of the Bavarian State Ballet for two periods (1970-1973 and 1984-1986), he has enjoyed a highly awarded international career. He is the creator of many original ballets, which include The Merry Widow, Rosalinda, Papillon, Le Diable a Quatre, Hunchback of Notre Dame, King Ludwig II and Coppelia. Many of these productions have entered the repertoires of such companies as Houston Ballet, The Royal Ballet, PACT Ballet (South Africa), Santiago Ballet of Chile and many other European and American companies. have entered the repertoires of such companies as Houston Ballet, The Royal Ballet, PACT Ballet (South Africa), Santiago Ballet of Chile and many other European and American companies.
