The European fascination with oriental exoticism in the late 18th century brought about numerous operas on this theme, such as Mozart's The Abduction from the Seraglio and one of the three great comedies by one of the most prodigious Italian composers of his time, Gioachino Rossini’s The Italian girl in Algiers from 1813.
