Fuggi, crudele, fuggi

Don Giovanni is an opera in two acts by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791) with a libretto by Lorenzo da Ponte, who based it on the myth of Don Juan, and mainly on the work of the Spanish monk and playwright Tirso de Molina, The joker of Seville (1630). It was first performed in Prague, at the National Theater, on October 29, 1787.

This opera is the example par excellence of Mozart's genius, where the best and the worst of human nature are exposed, where the tragic and the grotesque, the sublime and the ridiculous are combined in the search for more spiritual and terrestrial desires. All this together in the most beautiful music ever written, that even Richard Wagner would say that Don Giovanni is "the opera of all operas".

In the famous duet "Fuggi, crudele, fuggi" from the first act, Donna Anna makes her fiance, Don Ottavio, swear that he will take revenge for his father's death.

Why have we chosen it?

Because it is a brilliant combination of human tragedy and moving comedy, with music of immeasurable genius.

DONNA ANNA
(disperatamente)
¡Fuggi, crudele, fuggi!
Lascia che mora anchi'io
Ora che è morto, oh Dio!
Chi a me la vita die '!

DON OTTAVIO
Senti, cor mio, deh! senti;
Guardami un solo istante!
Ti parla il caro amante,
che vive sol per te.

DONNA ANNA
¡Tu sei! ... perdon, mio bene -
L'affanno mio, le pene ...
¡Ah! il padre mio dov'è?

DON OTTAVIO
¿Il padre? Lascia, o cara,
la rimembranza amara.
Hai sposo e padre en mí.

DONNA ANNA
¡Ah! Vendicar, se il puoi,
Giura quel sangue ognor!

DON OTTAVIO
Lo giuro agli occhi tuoi,
Lo giuro al nostro amor!

A DUE
Che giuramento, o dei!
Che barbaro momento!
Tra cento attatti e cento
Vammi ondeggiando il cor.

DONNA ANNA
(desperately)
Away, cruel, away!
Let me die too,
now that he is dead, oh God!
The one who gave me life.

DON OCTAVIO
Listen to me, sweetheart,
Listen to me for just a moment;
the lover speaks to you
who lives only for you.

DONNA ANNA
It is you! Sorry, my love.
My anguish, my sorrow...
Ah, where is my father?

DON OCTAVIO
Your father... leave, my dear,
that bitter memory behind;
husband and father you have in me.

DONNA ANNA
Ah, swear that you will revenge,
if you can, that blood!

DON OCTAVIO
I swear on your eyes!
I swear by our love!

DUET
What an oath, oh godness!
What a terrible moment!
My heart is shaken among
so many feelings.
