OPERA IN THREE ACTS (1901)
MUSIC BY ANTONIN DVOŘÁK
LIBRETTO BY JAROSLAV KVAPIL, BASED ON CZECH FAIRYTALES BY KAREL JAROMÍR ERBEN AND BOŽENA NĚMCOVÁ

The Czech composer Antonin Dvorák wanted to compose a folk opera and in just a few months he produced one of the most performed operas in the history of the Czech Republic since 1900 (over 500 performances just in 1946). Rusalka, a water nymph from the mermaid family -many say that the libretto is based on Slavic legends but also on Hans Christian Andersen's historical tale- is the expression of the composer's melodic gift. The story of the nymph who wants to be human for the love of a prince arrives to the Teatro Colón for the first time, with the famous aria "Song of the Moon". A metaphor for the bond between human beings and nature and a fantastic love story.
