The Seasons
ORATORY IN FOUR PARTS (1801)
LIBRETTO BY THE COMPOSER, INSPIRED BY THE POEM LES SAISONS BY JAMES THOMSON
The Seasons (Die Jahreszeiten) reflects the life of the farmer Simon and his daughter Hanna who contemplate the regular order of their days: from the greening of the trees that indicates the awakening of the earth, through the summer storms and the subsequent harvest, to the dense fog that announces the winter frost. Haydn abandons the sacred scriptures and builds an ode to nature from the poetic work of the Scottish James Thomson. With this work, Haydn doesn’t set his sights on divine transcendence anymore but on the world that surrounds man. A strong and necessary musical celebration by the master of the first Viennese classicism.
