Premiered a few days before the French Revolution, it was the first ballet based on recognizable and contemporary characters, instead of resorting to ancient Rome or Greece or to the royals. It portrays the social movements of the time when dealing with the love relationship between an aristocrat maiden and a young peasant, who are pestered by their social milieu. Although it was originally conceived by Jean Dauberval, the most widely known version is the one created by the great British choreographer Sir Frederick Ashton (1904-1988) for the Royal Ballet of London. The ballet displays one of his most virtuoso choreography, most strikingly in the series of energetic pas de deux that express the youthful passion of the protagonists and the surprising fusion of folk dances and classic ballet.
