OPERA IN TWO ACTS (1913)
Libretto in Spanish by Carlos Fernández Shaw
It was first staged in French, adapted by Paul Millet.
Brief Life is one of the great operas written in Spanish and tells the story of a gypsy woman betrayed by her lover, who marries an upper class young woman. Although veristic, it merges styles to offer an Iberian drama colored by flamenco, like Bizet’s Carmen, and a classical Western one, resembling Puccini’s writing and Wagner’s orchestration. However, the Andalusian singing is the opera’s most prominent influence. It was staged at Teatro Colón in 1923, 1933, 1956, 1969, 1976 and 1992.
