La Finta Giardiniera presents the story of a marquise who disguises herself as a gardener to escape from her husband. As is often the case in opera buffa, class contrasts, extravagant misunderstandings and misguided love affairs are the order of the day. In this work, the very young Mozart achieved, at the age of 18, an effective union of serious and comic episodes, and a stylistic synthesis between Italian and German, laying the foundations for the famous trilogy of operas he composed in the following decade, in collaboration with Da Ponte.
