As Michael Talbot rightly says in his biography of Vivaldi, the "Opera Seria" was able to sustain itself for more than a century not as a coordinated whole, but rather by the superimposition (sometimes chaotic) of particular expertise. This satire by Donizetti tells of the vicissitudes of a mediocre regional opera group rehearsing for the premiere of the opera seria Romulo and Ersilia, and facing numerous crazy obstacles. Amidst many disputes, the prima donna refuses to rehearse, the German tenor cannot master either the lyrics or the melodies, several singers threaten to leave... The show finally collapses and, instead of paying all the investors (whose money has already been spent), the company flees town under cover of night.
