SECRETARY OF THE CONSULATE
The Consul tells the misadventures of a politically persecuted man and the Kafkaesque efforts of his wife in a diplomatic headquarters to flee to a free country. A humanist and playwright of popular roots, much of Menotti's (1911-2007) work explores the connection between man and power in all its manifestations.
In 1999, at the age of 88, the Italian-American composer came to Argentina for the first time to take charge of the régie of this title at the Teatro Colón which, between 1953 and 1967, had already offered it in four seasons, after its world premiere in Philadelphia. For this opera, Menotti won the Pulitzer Prize for Music and the New York Drama Critics Circle Award.
