Rappaccini’s Daughter
OPERA IN TWO ACTS (1991)
Libretto by Juan Tovar, based on the play by Octavio Paz and the short story by Nathaniel Hawthorne
Mostly known as opera composer, Daniel Catán (1949-2011) scored symphonic and chamber pieces, songs and soundtracks for movies and TV, musical theater and even traditional Latin pop music. Based on the only play written by Octavio Paz (1914-1998), Nobel Prize Laureate in Literature, the story is set in the Italian Renaissance. Beatriz, the daughter of Dr. Rappaccini, meets Giovanni, a young student, and falls in love with him. Giovanni invites Beatriz to travel around the world, but she is afraid of leaving her beautiful garden, the only universe she knows, grown by her father with poisonous plants. Rappaccini will underestimate the power of nature, which will swallow them all.
