Born in Japan and educated in Germany, Toshio Hosokawa is a leading figure of contemporary music and very active in Europe and his native country. His work combines Western avant-garde and traditional Japanese culture. Since 1998, Toshio Hosokawa composer-in-residence of the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra. He held that same position in the Deutsches Symphonie Orchester in 2006 and 2007, and in the WDR Rundfunkchor Köln from 2006 to 2008.
In 2011, his third opera, Matsuzake, was premiered at La Monnaie in Brussels.
In The Raven, a monodrama composed in 2012 and based on the homonymous poem by Edgar Allan Poe, Hosokawa takes “the invasion of the animal as a sign of the collapsing rationalism of the modern world.”
