The Consul

The Consul

Descripción

OPERA IN THREE ACTS (1950)
Libretto in English by Gian Carlo Menotti

The Consul is about the mishaps of a politically persecuted man and the Kafkian bureaucracy his wife has to deal with in a diplomatic office to flee to a free country. Menotti (1911-2007) is a humanist and playwright with popular roots, and much of his work questions the relation of man and power in all its forms.

In 1999, at 88, the Italian-American composer came to Argentina for the first to direct The Consul at Teatro Colón, and the opera was staged in four seasons between 1953 and 1967, after its world premiere in Philadelphia. Menotti was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Music and the New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award for this work.
