Cavalleria Rusticana (1890) by Pietro Mascagni and I Pagliacci (1892) by Ruggero Leoncavallo form the most famous "doublet" of Italian opera. Both composers were members of the "Giovane Scuola", involved in the development of verismo, and these two works are masterful examples of the translation of verismo aesthetics into opera. Both present scenes from the suffering life of the late 19th Century and are characterized by a concise playwright, dominated by an oppressive climate of jealousy and violence. The music, for its part, gives the drama an unmistakably Italian identity.
