Permanent Choir

The Permanent Choir of the Teatro Colón was created in 1925. During the opening season it was lead by Achille Consoli and César Stiattesi. The next year, Rafael Terragnolo assumed the leading role and continued at the head of the Choir for twenty-five years. Between 1951 and 1967, it was conducted by Tullio Boni, succeeded in 1968 by Romano Gandolfi. Other important musical directors of the Choir were Carlos Berardi, Luis de Mallea, Valdo Sciammarella, Carlos Gandolfi, Andrés Máspero, Jorge Carciofolo, Alberto Balzanelli, Miguel Martínez, Vittorio Sicuri, Salvatore Caputo and Peter Burian. Its current director is Miguel Fabián Martínez. In addition to its important work in the lyrical seasons of the Teatro Colón, the Permanent Choir also participates in vocal-symphonic concerts. Among other works, it performed the Mass in B minor by Johann Sebastian Bach, the Missa Solemnis and the 9th Symphony by Ludwig van Beethoven, the Requiem by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, the German Requiem by Johannes Brahms, the Requiem by Hector Berlioz, the Psalmus hungaricus by Zoltan Kodály, Igor Stravinsky's Symphony of Psalms, Arnold Schönberg's Gurrelieder and Benjamin Britten's Requiem of War. In 1941, the Choir performed Verdi's Requiem and Beethoven's 9th Symphony conducted by Arturo Toscanini, in one of the milestones of its rich history, which also includes the 9th Symphony directed by Daniel Barenboim. The Permanent Choir is composed of a number of choristers that has been changing over the years, currently counting on more than 100 singers. To be a part of the Choir, its members must pass through vocal tests of artistic excellence. In addition to high vocal level, singers must have acting trainning, since nowadays the stage directors make more and more demanding performances in visual and theatrical terms.
