Permanent Orchestra
The Permanent Orchestra of the Teatro Colón is one of the oldest symphonic groups in Argentina. It was created in 1925 by the City Hall of Buenos Aires -together with the Permanent Ballet and Choir- responding to the theatre's need to have its instrumental group for the musical interpretation of the operas and ballets of the programming. In its first activities as a stable company, in 1928, the Permanent Orchestra was conducted by Tullio Serafin. From 1936 to 1949, it was conducted by the Austrian Erich Kleiber, who made axis in the German repertoire and the music of Richard Wagner, besides being responsable for shaping the group's high quality level. He conducted the premieres of Joan of Arc at the bonfire of Arthur Honegger in 1947 and The Woman without Shadow by Richard Strauss in 1949.
The performance of the Permanent Orchestra increased the fame of the Theatre among the Buenos Aires public. In 1941, the presentations together with Arturo Toscanini marked another milestone. The orchestra was conducted by first-class figures such as Fritz Busch, Hector Panizza, Ferdinand Leitner, Karl Böhm Thomas Beecham, Wilhelm Furtwängler, Richard Strauss, Herbert von Karajan, Ernest Ansermet, Clemens Krauss, Ottorino Respighi, Paul Hindemith, Aaron Copland, Heitor Villa-Lobos, Manuel de Falla, among others. In 1988, the members of the orchestra formed the civil Association of Teachers of the Permanent Orchestra of the Teatro Colón to expand the activities of the company. In 1992 the orchestra was presented at the Universal Exposition of Seville. In 2007 it made another tour to Mexico. In 2013 it was conducted by Valery Gergiev at a season opening concert. Throughout its fruitful existence, the Permanent Orchestra, which has no stable conductor, has been influenced by multiple maestros.
It has been the backbone of the lyrical seasons; it has also accompanied the Permanent Ballet performances (alternating with the Buenos Aires Philharmonic Orchestra), performed symphonic-choral concerts with the Permanent Choir, offered concerts with notable soloists and made recordings of Argentine music.
